From Friction to Forward: Conflict Conversations for Physician Leaders

October 22, 2026

Physician leaders routinely encounter interpersonal conflict, professionalism concerns, communication challenges, and resistance to change that can affect team dynamics, collaboration, and patient care. Despite these responsibilities, many physicians receive limited formal training in conflict management and difficult conversations. As a result, challenging discussions may be avoided, delayed, or handled in ways that increase defensiveness and reduce psychological safety. This activity will provide practical communication strategies to help physician leaders address conflict effectively while maintaining accountability and professional relationships. Participants will learn to differentiate among types of conflict, apply a structured approach to difficult conversations, and use leadership communication tools such as inquiry before advocacy, intent-versus-impact discussions, behavioural feedback techniques, emotional acknowledgement strategies, and boundary setting.
