There is a high rate of recurrent stroke after an ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack.  Identification and early management of modifiable risk factors, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, cardiac disease, behavioral interventions such as diet, physical activity, and smoking cessation have been shown to be effective in secondary stroke prevention.  An interdisciplinary approach toward aggressive management of these risk factors can be effective to prevent stroke in patients.  This activity addresses the treatment approach and discusses secondary stroke prevention.
