Women's Stroke Health: Lifelong Perspectives on Risk, Prevention, and Treatment

February 12, 2025

This lecture addresses the professional practice gap in recognizing and managing strokes in women, including pregnant and postmenopausal patients. Gender-specific risk factors such as pregnancy, hormonal replacement therapy, and menopause are often underrecognized, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Limited research on the neurologic implications of menopause and underrepresentation of women in stroke studies further contribute to gaps in evidence-based care. This activity will equip healthcare providers with the skills to identify and address unique stroke presentations in women, incorporating age-specific risk factors and updated guidelines into clinical practice. By enhancing competence in gender-specific stroke care, this education aims to improve diagnostic accuracy, treatment strategies, and outcomes for women across all life stages.

  • Discuss evidence-based approaches to managing stroke risk in women, with a focus on pregnancy, post-menopause, and early menopause due to medical conditions such as cancer.
  • Explain how menopause, including early onset, alters biological chemistry and increases stroke risk, and incorporate this knowledge into patient education and care plans.
  • Evaluate current guidelines and research gaps in women’s health, with a focus on advancing understanding and care for stroke in female patients.
